project space 13 - Alan Belcher and u

In 1993 Alan Belcher started making self portrait voodoo dolls. The dolls were were made using parts of his body including hair, fingernails, and his blood as well as his passport photo, his bedsheets stuffed with his used socks, and other personal effects. Over 40 of these works were made during a period of two years.

In 1995 Alan showed the self portraits in a solo exhibition at Jack Shainman Gallery in New York, where several of them were stolen.

In 2018 his appendix burst and went septic, the surgery was successful and other than a recent root canal operation, he is feeling strong.

His destiny and fate remains in the hands of u, the viewer.
